India tour of England 2018, Fourth Test Match, Day 1, England vs India – India trail by 227 runs
Thursday, August 30, 2018, The Rose Bowl, Southampton
Day 1 Wrap:
Sam Curran, the savior of England!! This 20-year old youngster played one of the best knocks under pressure in this format of the game. England were 86 for 6 when he walked out to bat and took England to 246 (all out) when he got out with his brilliant 78 runs which included 8 fours and a six.
“I wasn’t proving a point at all. I was just playing the way I do, naturally and freely. I was unlucky obviously last week to miss out. There are some great names in the team and I’m learning so much,” said Sam Curran at Stumps on Day 1.
Sam Curran has been involved in two great partnerships that helped England get to a respectable total in the first innings. He added 81 runs for the seventh wicket along with Moeen Ali and 63 runs along Stuart Broad for the ninth wicket!
India’s best bowler in the first innings at Trent Bridge – Hardik Pandya – heavily conceded (51 runs) in the 8 overs he bowled in Southampton, nonetheless, he got the wicket of Alastair Cook! Jasprit Bumrah with three wickets has been once again exceptional with the ball especially the delivery he bowled to get rid of Keaton Jennings was the highlight of the day! Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 2 wickets apiece.
Indian openers later saw off the new ball for 4 overs before Stumps. India’s Over Rate was terrible and as a whole only 80.4 overs were bowled on Day 1 using an extra half-hour in day’s play! Wonder how ICC is going to respond to this!
