England veteran batsman Alastair Cook scored 147 runs in the second innings of the ongoing fifth Test match between England and India at The Oval. The test also marks the final Test match in Alastair Cook’s career and this century marked the fairytale return of Cook in this format!

Cook made his Test debut against India and also played his last Test match against India! On debut in Nagpur in 2006, Cook scored a half century and a century and he repeated the same feat in his last Test match which was also against India at The Oval – a fifty in the first innings and a century in the second innings in the Oval Test match.

With his hundred at The Oval, Cook added another feather to his cap of long list of records! He became the fifth player overall and first English batsman to score a century in the debut Test and in the last Test match. India’s former captain Mohammad Azharuddin in 2000 was the last player to feature in this list before Alastair Cook!

Alastair Cook’s Debut Test match:

Cook made his Test-debut against India in Nagpur in the year 2006 and had scores of 60 in the first innings and an unbeaten 104* in the second innings. Cook became the second player after Bryan Valentine from England to debut against India and score a hundred in the same Test. Keaton Jennings is the third and only other England player till date to score a Test century on debut against India.

Alastair Cook’s career last Test match:

Cook scored 71 runs in the first innings and a magnificent 147 in the second innings of the fifth Test match against India at The Oval (2018). Playing in his last Test match, Cook smashed his 33rd century. These are the most number of centuries scored by an England player in this longer format of the game!

Alastair Cook, on 76, in the second innings at The Oval gone past Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to become the fifth highest run scorer in Tests. He is currently the highest run getter among left handers in this format of the game! Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Pointing, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid – all right-handers – are the top four run getters in Tests.
