India tour of England 2018, ODI Series
With two back-to-back centuries in the second and third ODIs against India in the recently concluded three match ODI series, Joe Root climbed up four spots in the ICC ODI Batsmen Rankings to finish at the second position just below India captain Virat Kohli.
Joe Root is now at the second position in the rankings with 818 rating points. This second position is his best in the ICC ODI Batsmen rankings but his points isn’t. Root earlier this year achieved his career best 819 rating points with a series of undefeated scores in the ODIs against Australia in Australia.
In the final T20I at Bristol against India, Joe Root was dropped owing to his poor form with the bat. And a score of just 3 runs in the first ODI did not help him either. However, he made a strong comeback in the next two ODIs and scored two back-to-back unbeaten centuries (113* at Lord’s, 100* at Headingly) to help England win the three match ODI series by 2 – 1.
Joe Root is the only English player at the moment to have a place in the top 10 ICC ODI Batsmen rankings. England opener Jonny Bairstow with 769 points is at the eleventh position and is just behind Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan (770 points).
India’s left arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for the first time in his ODI career broke into the ICC ODI Bowler Rankings with a great display of spin bowling on England pitches. With a total of 9 wickets in the three match ODI series (6 wickets at Trent Bridge, 3 wickets at Lord’s), Kuldeep Yadav is now sitting prettily at the sixth position in the ICC ODI Bowler Rankings with 684 rating points.
Kuldeep picked up 6 for 25, his career best figures, in the first ODI at Trent Bridge – the venue where England had scored the top two highest ODI totals. And in the second ODI too at Lord’s he didn’t disappoint as he picked up a three wicket haul with the ball. The second rank and the 684 rating points are both the best Kuldeep Yadav achieved in his ODI career.
India’s go to bowler Jasprit Bumrah, despite missing the whole England ODI tour, is currently sitting prettily at the top of the ICC ODI Bowler Rankings with 775 points. The other Indian wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is at the tenth position with 666 rating points and is just below South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada (679 points).
