India tour of England 2018, Fifth Test Match, Day 1, England vs India
Friday, September 7, 2018, The Oval, London
Day 1 Wrap:
Joe Root won the toss, his fifth toss-win in this series, and opted to bat first. He became the first captain since Australia’s Mark Taylor in Ashes 1988/89 season to win all the five tosses in a series. On the other hand, Virat Kohli became the third Indian captain – after Lala Amarnath and Kapil Dev – to lose all the five tosses in a five Test match series!
Having opted to bat first, England are off to a great start with their openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings adding 60 runs for the first wicket. Jadeja who is making a return in this Test match removed Keaton Jennings on 23. Then Cook (71 runs) and Moeen Ali (50 runs) batted 40.1 overs while scoring just 63 runs and this pair denied a single wicket to India in the second innings!
Alastair Cook, in the process, scored his maiden half century in this season. Playing in his last Test match, Cook scored 71 runs facing 190 deliveries with 8 fours. At one stage, he looked like getting to a big score but a peach of delivery from India’s Jasprit Bumrah dismissed him. Nonetheless, it was a great innings with calm and composure. This is also the only fifty scored by an opener in this series so far.
Indian bowlers, however, made a comeback in the third session of the day removing six England batsmen to get back into the game. Ishant Sharma picked up 3 wickets while Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah got two wickets apiece on Day 1. Jos Buttler (11*) and Adil Rashid (4*) are at the crease and England will have to look to get close to 300-mark to stand a chance in this Test match.
