Dream Debut for Arjun Tendulkar

Dream debut for Arjun Tendulkar

India U19 tour of Sri Lanka, First Youth U19 Test Match, Sri Lanka U19 vs India U19

Tuesday, July 17, 2018, Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, Colombo

Arjun Tendulkar made his Under 19 debut for India in the First Under19 Youth Tests against Sri Lanka in Colombo today, July 17. On the other hand, his father, Sachin Tendulkar never played a single match in any ‘age group cricket’. In case if you are not aware, Sachin Tendulkar started playing for India at the International level when he was just 16 and the rest is history.

Arjun Tendulkar has a slim 5-feet 9-inch cutout and unlike his father Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun is a left arm fast bowler. He is surely a left arm fast bowler with a lovely action which India is missing since Zaheer Khan’s retirement. Though it is too early to say, Indian fans would want him to see in India colors and make the country proud with his performances.

There was a lot of criticism when Arjun Tendulkar was picked in the India Under 19 squad for the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka. However, Arjun too is travelling the same route Sachin used to go to silence his critics – silencing with the on-field performances.

On his debut, Arjun Tendulkar took only 12 deliveries to strike with his left arm pace. Sri Lanka have opted to bat first in the first Youth Test and India U19 captain asked Arjun to bowl the first over of the match. Surely, he did not disappoint anyone as he struck with the final delivery of his second over (third over of the innings).

Arjun Tendulkar trapped Sri Lankan opener Kamil Mishara LBW for just 9 runs. The ball seamed in from good length area and pinned the rear leg of Sri Lankan opener and the standing umpire had no hesitation in raising his finger to grant Arjun Tendulkar his maiden wicket at the competitive level.

Arjun finished the first innings with the figures – 11 overs, 2 maidens, 33 runs, 1 wicket. He did not get a chance to bowl much later in the innings as Indian spinners wreaked havoc on the typical Sri Lankan pitch. India U19 will play two Youth Tests followed by five Youth ODIs. The two match Tests are in progress and the five match ODI series will be played starting from July 30.
