South Africa tour of Sri Lanka 2018, Five Match ODI series, Third ODI, Sri Lanka vs South Africa
Sunday, Aug 05, 2018, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele
Sri Lanka were thrashed to death in the first ODI while they experienced a ‘slow death’ in the second match. It was a complete batting failure for the hosts in the first two ODIs with two low totals – 193 in the first ODI and a 244 in the second ODI. They have to get their batting department up and running as soon as they can.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews is very critical about their approach. He thinks they are too much dependent on spinners while dishing out dust-bowls to win games. And with just under ten months away from the World Cup 2019, he thinks this approach is not going to help them at all.
“We have to take a look at where we have gone wrong in the past. In the last 36 ODIs, we have won only nine games and we keep giving excuses. Ten months away from World Cup we need to find out whether we are going to gain anything by playing on dusty slow wickets against a team like South Africa. We rely on our spinners too much, I think,” said Angelo Mathews.
On the other hand, South Africa fought back well and defeated Sri Lanka in the first two ODIs. Going into the third ODI of this five match series, South Africa have a lead of 2 – 0. They just need to win just one match of the remaining three ODIs to win the series.
Under pressure Sri Lanka are expected to make changes to their playing XI in this do-or-die game. South Africa looked complete in the first two ODI games and unless any of their players get injured, they will not make any changes to their playing XI in this ODI.
