South Africa tour of Sri Lanka 2018, ODI Series, First ODI, Sri Lanka vs South Africa – South Africa won by 5 wickets
Sunday, July 30, 2018, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla
Sri Lanka were 36 for the loss of 5 wickets and at that stage it looked like all but finished. Then the two Pereras (Kusal and Thisara) combined to help Sri Lanka at least finish with a par total on the board. Kusal Perera scored 81 runs, while Thisara scored 49 runs as both stitched a 92-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Tabraiz Shamsi then dismissed both these batsmen to bring back South Africa in to the game. Sri Lanka are eventually bowled out for just 193 runs in 34.3 overs. This was just a dismal performance from them after a great two match Test series against the same opponents. Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi both picked up a four wicket haul each.
During the chase, South Africa fumbled at the beginning as Sri Lanka’s wrist spinner Akila Dananjaya dismissed Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram in two consecutive deliveries in the fifth over. And just when everyone thought that the ODI is heading in the same direction as Tests, three top knocks helped the visitors chase the target with ease – 40s for Quinton and Du Plessis while JP Duminy scored an unbeaten half-century.
With this victory, South Africa take a 1 – 0 lead in the 5 match series. The second ODI of the series will be played at same venue on Wednesday (Aug 01).
South Africa – 196/5 in 31 overs (JP Duminy – 53*, Faf du Plessis – 47, Quinton de Kock – 47, Akila Dananjaya – 3/50, Suranga Lakmal – 1/37) beat Sri Lanka – 193 all out in 34.3 overs (Kusal Perera – 81, Thisara Perera – 49, Tabraiz Shamsi – 4/33, Kagiso Rabada – 4/41) by 5 wickets
