Afghanistan tour of Ireland 2018, Second ODI, Ireland vs Afghanistan – Ireland won by 3 wickets
Wednesday, August 29, 2018, Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast
What a nail biting finish to the second ODI! Ireland were all the way during the chase but with the departure of Andy Balbirnie with 19 more to score brought back Afghanistan right into the game! However, Simi Singh held his nerve batted along with the tail and guided Ireland home with 3 wickets in hand and 6.1 overs (37 deliveries) to spare.
Ireland’s fast bowler Tim Murtagh set the tone with the ball upfront in the first half with three quick wickets inside 5 overs. And a run out in the 8th over further dented the hopes of Afghanistan getting to a good score after opting to bat first. Rahmat Shah is the lone performer with the bat in their top order with 32 runs. Lower batting order stepped up and contributed crucial runs to help Afghanistan finish with a paltry score of 182 for 9 in 50 overs.
Ireland lost their captain – William Porterfield – in the very first over of the chase for a 4-ball Duck to Mujeeb ur Rahman. Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie batted brilliantly then adding 69 runs for the second wicket. Ireland who were in command in most part of the chase, escaped a late scare and went on to win the game by 3 wickets to level the three match ODI series 1-1.
