Mathews to lead Sri Lanka in South Africa ODIs

South Africa tour of Sri Lanka 2018, Five Match ODI Series

Sri Lanka Cricket on Tuesday (July 24) announced their 15-man squad for the forthcoming five match One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa, with their former captain Angelo Mathews returning to lead Sri Lanka in this format. Left arm Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya is the only uncapped player in their 15-member squad.

Sri Lanka’s Test captain Dinesh Chandimal who is currently serving a six match ban (2 Tests & 4 ODIs) and their opener Danushka Gunathilaka, who is suspended from playing in International cricket are among the players who are sidelined from this five match series. Asela Gunaratne, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Shehan Madushanka and Wanidu Hasaranga are the other exclusions from their ODI squad that toured Bangladesh for the ODI Tri Series earlier this year.

Sri Lanka have played 7 ODIs against South Africa with Angelo Mathews as their Captain. Out of these seven matches, Sri Lanka had won 3 games and lost 4.

Sri Lanka played their last ODI match in Bangladesh in January 2018 in a Tri Series involving Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, which Sri Lanka won comfortably beating Bangladesh in the final by 79 runs. South Africa’s last ODI series (6 ODI match series) was against India in January which they lost by 1 – 5.

The five match ODI series between Sri Lanka and South Africa starts in Dambulla on July 29 (Sunday). The first two ODIs will be played at Dambulla, while the next two games will be played in Pallekele. The fifth and final ODI of the series will be played at RPS Colombo.
