India tour of England 2018, ODI Series
Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the three match ODI series against England due to a thumb injury, which he sustained during India tour of Ireland last month. As per a media release from BCCI, Bumrah travelled back to India and is currently under the supervision of BCCI medical team.
“Bumrah underwent a surgery on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in Leeds before returning to India. The surgery was successful and he will commence rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team,” said BCCI in a media release.
Bumrah, in the first T20I against Ireland on June 27, while trying to take a return catch off his own bowling, split the webbing of his right hand fracturing his thumb. The same injury had kept him out of the second T20I against Ireland and the recently concluded three match T20I series against England.
Shardul Thakur has been named as his replacement for the three match ODI series in England. Jasprit Bumrah is currently the top ranked (no. 1) bowled in ICC ODI Bowler Rankings while Shardul Thakur had the experience of playing only 3 ODIs for India thus far.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Shardul Thakur as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ODI squad,” added the media release.
The ODI series between India and England will be played at Trent Bridge (on July 12), at Lord’s (on July 14) and at Headingly (July 17). India have already won the three match T20I series against England and they can afford to go into ODIs without him. However, it is the five match Test series in which his services will be needed and Team India want him to get fit before August 01 – the first Test on Edgbaston.
On the other hand, Washington Sundar, who injured his leg before Ireland tour has also been sidelined from this tour of England. BCCI earlier has named Krunal Pandya as his T20I replacement, while Axar Patel as ODI replacement. However, with the kind of form Team India players are in, Krunal Pandya did not get a chance to play in T20Is and there wouldn’t any surprise if Axar did not make it to the playing XI in the ODI series.
