South Africa tour of Sri Lanka 2018, Third ODI, Sri Lanka vs South Africa – South Africa won by 78 runs
Sunday, August 05, 2018, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele
Sri Lanka’s decision to bowl first on a batting track has come back to haunt them very badly in Pallekele! Reeza Hendricks who made his ODI debut for South Africa in this game compiled a brilliant ton scoring 102 off just 89 deliveries which includes 8 fours and a six. And then JP Duminy batted well and scored a fluent 92 runs off just 70 deliveries with 8 fours and 4 sixes!
Sri Lanka’s bowling looked a bit flop today as they conceded heavily in the death overs. Proteas squeezed 98 runs off the final 7 overs to finish their innings with a massive total on the board – 363 for the loss of 7 wickets. Thisara Perera is the pick of the bowlers for hosts with a four-wicket haul, however, he conceded too many runs though!
Chasing a massive total, Sri Lanka came out all guns blazing! Very aggressive at the start and lost wickets at regular wickets playing rash shots which did not help their cause. Dananjaya de Silva (84 runs) registered his ODI-career-best-score but that did not help Sri Lanka get over the line. His 95-run partnership with Akila Dananjaya (37 runs) for the seventh wicket is the only best period for Sri Lanka in this game.
In the end, Sri Lanka fell short by a big margin of 78 runs conceding this match as well as the series to South Africa. The fourth ODI will be played at the same venue on Wednesday (Aug 08).
South Africa – 363/7 in 50 overs (Reeza Hendricks – 102, Jean Paul Duminy – 92, Thisara Perera – 4/75, Lahiru Kumara 2/67) beat Sri Lanka – 285 all out in 45.2 overs (Dhananjaya de Silva – 84, Akila Dananjaya – 37, Lungi Ngidi – 4/57, Andile Phehlukwayo – 3/74) by 78 runs
