India tour of England 2018, First ODI, England vs India – India won by 8 wickets
Thursday, July 12, 2018, Trent Bridge, Nottingham
Such an anti-climax to the first ODI at the Trent Bridge, which was in discussion since England scored highest ODI total at this venue against Australia last month. Batting first, England literally crawled their way to 268 before getting bowled out with one ball to spare. And in-form India chased this total down in just 40.1 overs courtesy a Rohit Sharma special.
Put into bat first, England were off to a great start with Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy adding 73 runs in the first 10 overs. And then started the Kuldeep-Yadav-show, who picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs – 6 for 25 in his 10 overs. Jos Buttler is the only star performer with the bat for hosts scoring 53 runs off just 51 deliveries.
On the other hand, Ben Stokes played ‘un-Ben-Stokes’ kind of innings (as quoted by Alan Wilkins from the comm box) in this ODI. He took 103 deliveries to score his 50 runs and this knock included just 2 fours. In response, India chased down the target with 8 wickets in hand and with 9.5 overs to spare. Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 137* (off 114 balls) while Virat Kohli scored 75 runs (off 82 balls).
Surprisingly, none of the England pacers picked up a wicket in this ODI match. And Umesh Yadav with 2 wickets is the only pacer from both the sides in this game to pick up at least a wicket in this game. With this victory, India take a 1 – 0 lead in the three match ODI series. The Second Match will be played at the Lord’s on Saturday (July 14).
India – 269/2 in 40.1 overs (Rohit Sharma – 137*, Virat Kohli – 75, Moeen Ali – 1/60, Adil Rashid – 1/62) beat England – 268 all out in 49.5 overs (Jos Buttler – 53, Ben Stokes – 50, Kuldeep Yadav – 6/25, Umesh Yadav – 2/70) by 8 wickets
