Bangladesh tour of West Indies 2018, ODI Series, First ODI, West Indies vs Bangladesh – Bangladesh won by 48 runs
Sunday, July 22, 2018, Providence Stadium, Guyana
Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first in the first ODI of the three match series. Only to complicate things for the visitors, West Indies captain Jason Holder got rid of opener Anamul Haque in the second over of the match for a 3-ball DUCK, then it was a history in the making for the Bangladesh team.
Opener Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan batted for 43 overs without losing a wicket. This pair added 207 runs for the second wicket, which is their second highest partnership for any wicket in ODIs. In the process Tamim Iqbal got to his 10th century in ODIs – 130 runs off 160 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes.
Shakib al Hasan was unlucky to miss out on his personal milestone. He was departed three runs short of his century – 97 runs from 121 balls with 6 fours. Later Mushfiqur Rahim scored brisk 30 runs from just 11 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes to help Bangladesh finish with 279 for 4 in their 50 overs.
Surprisingly, West Indies miserably failed to chase down this low target on their home ground as they fell short by 48 runs in the end. For a side boasting the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Evin Lewis, this is not a great batting effort. Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza starred with the ball picking up 4 wickets in his 10 overs while conceding just 37 runs.
With this victory, Bangladesh now take a lead of 1 – 0 in the three match ODI series against West Indies. The second match of the series will be played at the same venue on Wednesday (July 25).
Bangladesh – 279/4 in 50 overs (Tamim Iqbal – 130*, Shakib al Hasan – 97, Devendra Bishoo – 2/52, Jason Holder – 1/47) beat West Indies – 231/9 in 50 overs (Shimron Hetmyer – 52, Chris Gayle – 40, Mashrafe Mortaza – 4/37, Mustafizur Rahman – 2/35) by 48 runs
