Afghanistan tour of Ireland 2018, First ODI, Ireland vs Afghanistan – Afghanistan won by 29 runs
Monday, August 27, 2018, Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast
Afghanistan with an all-round performance pipped Ireland in the first ODI at the latter’s home ground to take 1-0 lead in the three match series. Visitors already won the three match T20I series by 2-0 and they had a great start to the ODI series as well with a 29-run victory on Monday (Aug 27).
Having opted to bowl first, safe to say Ireland bowled really well keeping Afghanistan’s scoring rate to a minimum. None of the Afghan batsmen got going at any point of the game and both their half century makers scored at a strike rate of just 65. Afghanistan with fifties each from Gulbadin Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi finished with just 227 for 9 in their 50 overs.
Chasing a modest total, Ireland got into all sorts of trouble with not being able to flourish a big partnership. Their best stand was the 40-run partnership between Andy Balbirnie and Simi Singh for the fourth wicket. And losing both the O’Brien brothers to two untimely run outs did not help their cause! Ireland, in the end, lost the game by 29 runs. Balbirnie was the lone performer with the bat for the hosts scoring 55 runs with 6 boundaries.
With this victory, Afghanistan are leading the three match series by a margin of 1-0. The second ODI of the three match series will be played at the same venue on Wednesday (Aug 29).
Afghanistan– 227/9 in 50 overs (Gulbadin Naib – 64, Hashmatullah Shahidi – 54, Tim Murtagh – 4/31, Boyd Rankin – 3/44)beat Ireland – 198 all out in 48.3 overs (Andrew Balbirnie – 55, Gary Wilson – 38, Aftab Alam – 2/34, Rashid Khan – 2/41) by 29 runs
