IPL 2018, 56th Match, Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab – Chennai Super Kings won by 5 wickets
Sunday, May 20, 2018, Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune
Lungi Ngidi’s economical spell (4 overs, 1 maiden, 10 runs, 4 wickets) combined with Suresh Raina’s unbeaten knock during the chase helped Chennai super kings defeat Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets.
To make it to the playoffs, KXIP needed to win this game by 53 runs to pip the Rajasthan Royals by Net Run Rate in the points table. However, After losing their top order batsmen very cheaply, Punjab got to just 153. Lokesh Rahul (7), Chris Gayle (0) and Aaron Finch (4) added just 11 runs, which dented KXIP’s chances to put a huge total in this game.
Chasing 144 to win, Suresh Raina (batting at no. 3) remained unbeaten till the end to take Chennai over the line. Deepak Chahar (39 off 20) and MS Dhoni (16* off 7) knocks have come in handy at the fag end of this chase. With this win, CSK finished at the second position with 9 wins in 14 games.
Kings XI Punjab’s journey is a tale of two halves in this eleventh edition of IPL 2018 – The first half is as good as any team would dream of (5 wins in first 7 games) followed by a nightmarish second half (1 win in 7 games). With just 6 wins in 14 games, Kings XI Punjab finished at the seventh position of the table. Unfortunate for them to end their campaign this way as they maintained their place in the top four for most of the season.
With this result, the Rajasthan Royals became the fourth and final team to book a playoff berth. Sun Risers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals will play in the playoffs starting from Tuesday (May 22).
Chennai Super Kings – 159/5 in 19.1 overs (Suresh Raina – 61*, Deepak Chahar – 39, Ankit Rajpoot – 2/19, Ravichandran Ashwin – 2/36) beat Kings XI Punjab – 153 in 19.4 overs (Karun Nair – 54, Manoj Tiwary – 35, Lungi Ngidi – 4/10, Dwayne Bravo – 2/39) by 5 wickets
