Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have appointed former South African player Gary Kristen as their coach and mentor starting from the IPL 2019 season. He earlier played the role of head coach of Team India during which they went on to win the World Cup 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Gary Kristen was appointed as RCB’s batting coach just ahead of the IPL 2018 season. Reports at the moment are emerging that RCB captain Virat Kohli played his role in sacking Daniel Vettori as head coach and promoting Gary Kristen to the top position!
“I had the privilege of coaching with the RCB team last season under head coach Daniel Vettori and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I look forward to continuing the journey with RCB and doing my best to help the franchise reach its potential. I want to thank the team management for considering me in a leadership position with the franchise and I look forward to a successful few years,” said Gary Kristen.
Kristen will take over the reins from New Zealand’s former player Daniel Vettori who joined the franchise as a player in 2008. He was later offered the role of coaching at the beginning of the IPL 2013 season. As a whole, Daniel Vettori spent 8 long years with the RCB franchise.
“I am extremely grateful for the eight years I have spent with RCB, as a player and a coach and I wish the franchise all the best moving forward,” said Daniel Vettori after this announcement from RCB.
Best period for Daniel Vettori as RCB coach was during the IPL 2016 season. RCB reached to the finals during that season and narrowly lost to Sun Risers Hyderabad in the tournament finals by just 8 runs. However, they had a terrible 2017 season with just 3 wins and finished at 8th place (bottom of the table). In IPL 2018 as well, their fortunes did not get better as they won just 6 out of 14 matches finishing at 6th place.
Having featured in the first ever IPL season in 2008, Royal Challengers is among the three teams who are yet to win IPL Championship. Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab are the other two teams in this category besides RCB!
Gary Kristen previously signed a three-year deal with Delhi Daredevils (DD) franchise starting from the year 2013 but the contract was terminated after two years as DD finished at the bottom of the table in both the seasons! Only time will tell how things go for him at the RCB franchise.
