As many as five centuries were scored in the recently concluded eleventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). Surprisingly, four out of these five centuries were scored against the bowling-heavy Sun Risers Hyderabad (SRH). Four of these centuries resulted in victory while Rishabh Pant was unlucky to be on the losing side.
Shane Watson (CSK):
Playing for the Chennai Super Kings for the first time in his IPL career, Shane Watson has scored two centuries in this season. The first of the two was scored against the Rajasthan Royals (106 off 57 deliveries with 9 fours and 6 sixes) at the league stage and the second century (117* off 57 deliveries with 11 fours and 8 sixes) was against the Sun Risers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018 final match.
106 vs RR: Watson played for RR till 2015 and in 2013 he scored his maiden IPL ton against the Chennai Super Kings. Playing for CSK in 2018, he scored his second IPL ton against his former team mates. Also, this is the only century which was scored against a team other than SRH in this season.
117* vs SRH: A record breaking century in the history of IPL tournament from Watson. This is the highest score for any player made in an IPL final going past Saha’s 115 (in IPL 2014 final vs KKR).
Rishabh Pant (DD):
This young player from Delhi scored an unbeaten 128* against Sun Risers Hyderabad at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. He took just 63 deliveries to get there including 15 fours and 7 sixes. Unfortunately, Delhi lost this game by a big margin of 9 wickets.
This is also the highest score by any Indian player in this tournament. Murali Vijay playing for CSK in 2010 has scored 127 in Chennai against Rajasthan Royals which was the previous highest score by an Indian player.
Chris Gayle (KXIP):
Universe T20 boss Chris Gayle was the first to score a century in this season. He scored an unbeaten 104* in 63 deliveries with a four and 11 sixes. His 11 sixes in this innings are also the joint most by any player in a single T20 innings in this IPL season.
None of the franchises opted for Gayle in the Auction until Virender Sehwag picked him at the very fag end. In the post-match presentation ceremony after scoring this century, Gayle said “Viru saved IPL by picking me”. One would only laugh at this statement as he miserably failed in the later matches of the IPL.
Ambati Rayudu (CSK):
It was Ambati Rayudu who helped CSK chase down a big score against Sun Risers Hyderabad in Pune. This is his maiden T20 hundred and scoring it against one of the top bowling sides made it very special.
Rayudu scored an unbeaten 100* off 62 deliveries with 7 fours and 7 sixes. This innings has helped Chennai Super Kings beat Sun Risers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in Pune.
