The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are taking steps towards to start an IPL kind of tournament for the Women. In such a move, they have decided to conduct an exhibition match in Mumbai just ahead of the first qualifier on Tuesday (May 22).
Two teams, IPL Trailblazers and IPL Supernovas, will play a single game on Tuesday at the Wankhede Stadium. IPL Trailblazers will be led by Smriti Mandhana while IPL Supernovas will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur.
This historic game between these two teams will be played starting from 02:00 pm IST on Tuesday (May 22). The coin toss will take place at 01:30 pm IST. This first-ever Women’s IPL match will be broadcasted live on the star network and hotstar.
This one-off exhibition game will feature 26 players which includes 16 Indians and 10 International players. The overseas players list consists of Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning, Meghan Schutt (all from Australia), Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Lea Tahuhu (all from New Zealand) and Danielle Wyatt, Danielle Hazell (all from England)
“This is being staged as a well-deserved exhibition to showcase the tremendous depth and capability that women’s cricket in India has achieved. We see it build into a women’s IPL tournament in a couple of years,” said Vinod Rai, chief of CoA.
IPL Trailblazers captain Smriti Mandhana believes that it is a good initiative and they can start with 4 to 5 teams at the moment while IPL supernovas captain Harmanpreet Kaur is very much excited about this game.
“Well we cannot have eight teams, but we can have an IPL of 4-5 teams to start with, definitely not eight teams, not right now. Four to five teams, to start with is a good initiative, because when men’s IPL started, first two seasons only foreigners scored and later on we started developing our bench-strength, you never know that same can happen with women’s cricket,” said Mandhana.
“We are very excited and were waiting since a long time when we could play an IPL like tournament. We are happy that we have got an opportunity tomorrow and hopefully we will get a good match tomorrow,” said Harmanpreet Kaur.
