Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday (June 18) have named two uncapped players in the squad for the limited overs format – Batsman Reeza Hendricks and young pacer Junior Dala. Both these players have made their T20I debut for South Africa, though. Also, Wiaan Mulder, who made his ODI debut against Bangladesh last year, has been recalled after missing the India series.
South Africa are also tinkering with their spin department as they have rested their first best spinner, Imran Tahir, to find out their second best in this department – “who our best second spinner is to back Imran Tahir” to put the exact words of CSA National Selection Panel convenor, Linda Zondi.
“As far as the Proteas squad is concerned, we have taken the strategic decision to rest Imran Tahir so that we can get a clearer picture as to who our best second spinner is to back him up at the World Cup. Imran will be our first- choice spinner at the World Cup but, if we play him against Sri Lanka, it is unlikely that we will be able to play both Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj,” said Zondi.
“By taking this route, we will be able to play the two of them together. Tabraiz has been the outstanding bowler in franchise white ball cricket this past season. Keshav has been outstanding for us in red ball cricket and we need to give him the opportunity to show us what he can do at international level in the ODI format,” Zondi added.
Faf du Plessis has been named captain of the 15-men squad and it would be interesting to see who is going to take AB de Villiers place in the playing XI. Cricket South Africa have also confirmed the same ODI squad will be used for the one-off Twenty 20 International (T20I) at the end of this tour.
South Africa will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 04 and will play a two-day practice match starting from July 07 in Colombo ahead of the two-match Test series. The five-match ODI series will start from July 29 with a one-off One Day warm-up match on July 26. After the ODI series, both these teams will play a lone T20I on August 14 in Colombo.
Limited overs games in this tour will be played at Dambulla, Kandy and Colombo. The first two ODIs will be played in Dambulla with third and fourth ODIs are scheduled to be played in Kandy. The fifth and final ODI along with the one-off T20I will be played in Colombo.
