Sri Lanka lost another player to injury

Sri Lanka are hit by another injury blow just before the start of Asia Cup in UAE. Batting all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka has been ruled out of the tournament with a lower back injury. He sustained this injury during team’s training session on Wednesday (Sep 12).

Gunathilaka will return to Sri Lanka from the training camp in UAE while another batting all-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya has been named as his replacement in the squad. Batting all-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya who is on the standby list earlier will fly to UAE to join the squad on Friday.

“Danushka Gunathilaka, who travelled with the team to UAE to take part in the Asia Cup 2018, will return to the country, as he has sustained a lower back injury. Shehan Jayasuriya, who was in the stand-by list will fly to UAE on Friday; as the replacement for Gunathilaka,” said Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in a media release.

In the recent domestic provincial T20 tournament, Gunathilaka had scored 247 runs at an average of 35.28 and a strike rate of 120. He had also finished as the third highest run getter in the T20 tournament. Especially after missing the limited overs leg against South Africa, missing Asia Cup tournament due to an injury will come as a great disappointment for Gunathilaka.

Shehan Madushanka, Nuwan Pradeep and Lakshan Sadakan are the three players who are still on Sri Lanka’s standby list. Meanwhile, Akila Dananjaya will not be available for their first few games as he is expecting his first child.
