Test Series, Second Test, Day 4, West Indies vs Sri Lanka
Monday, June 18, 2018, Darren Sammy National Cricket Ground, St Lucia
Day 4 Wrap:
It was a complete batting treat from the determined Sri Lankans who are playing in a do-or-die game to stay alive in the series. Visitors started the fourth day with 34 for 1 on the board. However, after scoring just 14 runs they have lost 3 wickets very cheaply. The manner of those dismissals will hurt them the most than the number of dismissals!
Kusal Mendis (87) and Dinesh Chandimal (39) then stitched a 117-run partnership for the fifth wicket to bail Sri Lanka out of trouble. Just after both these batsmen departed, Niroshan Dickwella (62) and Roshen Silva (48) added 99 runs for the seventh wicket to help SL further increase the second innings lead.
With this brilliant support from the middle order, Sri Lanka finished at 334 for 8 at stumps on Day 4. They now have a lead of 287 runs with Akila Dananjaya (16*) and Suranga Lakmal (7*) at the crease. It does seem like all the three results are still possible in this second Test match and an exciting Day 5 is on the cards!
Shannon Gabriel has picked up 6 for 57 so far in the second innings and these are his best bowling figures in a Test innings. And his 11 for 116 in this Test are also the best bowling figures for him in a Test match. Also, this is the first 10-fer for him in a Test match. With Sri Lanka still have 2 wickets in hand, Gabriel has the chance to improve his bowling figures!
Sri Lanka – 253 all out (Dinesh Chandimal – 119*, Shannon Gabriel – 5/59) and 334/8 (Kusal Mendis – 87, Shannon Gabriel – 6/57) lead West Indies – 300 all out (Devon Smith – 61, Lahiru Kumara – 4/86) by 287 runs
