Asia Cup 2018, Sixth Match, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan – Afghanistan won by 136 runs
Thursday, September 20, 2018, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Unbeaten 57* runs with the bat in the first half of the match and an economical spell (2 for 13 in 9 overs) in the second half, Rashid Khan cherished a ‘dream come true’ moment against Bangladesh on Thursday (Sep 20) in the ongoing Asia Cup tournament. Afghanistan outplayed Bangladesh in all the three departments to defeat them by a big margin of 136 runs and top the table in Group A.
Having opted to bat first, Afghanistan lost their first two wickets cheaply inside 6 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi then held one end tight with his 92-ball 58 and had taken them to the 150-mark. What happened later was history, a tale none would have predicted! Rashid Khan walked into bat at no. 9 with the scorecard reading 160 for 7, and scored a 31-ball fifty to take his team over 200.
Rashid and Gulbadin Naib (42* off 38) shared an unbeaten 95-run partnership for the 8th wicket to take them to 255 for 7 in 50 overs. Shakib al Hasan with 4 for 42 in his 10 overs is the pick of Bangladesh bowlers. Abu Hider Rony who made his ODI debut for Bangladesh in this match picked up 2 top-order wickets.
Chasing 256 to victory, there was no real fight from Bangladesh as eight of their batsmen departed for single digit scores! Shakib al Hasan is their top scorer with 32 runs while Mahmudullah (27 runs) and Mosaddek (26*) are the only others in their line-up to get to double digit scores! Rashid, Nabi, Mujeeb picked up 2 wickets apiece while Nabi, Aftab and Rahmat got a wicket each.
Rashid Khan who turned 20 has been presented with the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his all-round performance. On a lighter note, Bangladesh have rested their key batsman Mushfiqur Rahim while Afghanistan played their full-strength team.
Afghanistan– 255/7 in 50 overs (Hashmatullah Shahidi – 58, Rashid Khan – 57*, Shakib al Hasan – 4/42, Abu Hider Rony – 2/50) beat Bangladesh – 119 all out in 42.1 overs (Shakib al Hasan – 32, Mahmudullah – 27, Rashid Khan – 2/13, Mujeeb ur Rahman – 2/22) by 136 runs
