Asia Cup 2018, Super Four, Fifth Match, India vs Afghanistan – Match tied
Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai
Surprise! A lot of them in the India vs Afghanistan clash in the Asia Cup ‘Super Four’ match on Tuesday (Sep 25). It started with Mahendra Singh Dhoni walking out to toss as India captain and ended with Afghanistan holding on to a tie against a quality opposition! India made too many changes – rested both their openers and both their pacers along with Chahal.
India needed 7 runs off last over to win the match with just a wicket in hand. Ravindra Jadeja was on strike with Khaleel Ahmed at the other end. Unlike in their previous games, Afghanistan have preserved their star bowler Rashid Khan till the 50th over. Rashid bowled it brilliantly as India managed to score only 6 runs to finish the game as ‘tie’.
On a pitch where almost every Afghan batsman struggled, Mohammad Shahzad scored a brilliant century upfront. Mohammad Nabi then scored a half century to help them get past the 250-mark. Chasing 253 to win, Rayudu and Rahul started well with a 110-run stand for the first wicket. However, with two umpiring blunders (LBW decisions of Dhoni and Karthik) India had to settle for a Draw in the end.
Indian opener Lokesh Rahul used India’s only DRS review and when Dhoni and Karthik were given out, India have no reviews left! “I shouldn’t have taken the review,” felt Lokesh Rahul in the post-match press conference!
Shahzad has been presented the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his knock of 124 runs 116 deliveries which included 11 fours and 7 sixes. But our Player of the Match is Mohammad Nabi who was brilliant with both bat and ball – scored 64 runs and picked up two top-order wickets. Shahzad’s batting was more slogging in this game while Nabi batted with composure and played very good looking shots.
India had already qualified for the Asia Cup 2018 finals and the result of this game won’t matter much to them in this tournament! On the other hand, Afghanistan bows out of this tournament with a memorable tie against India.
Afghanistan– 252/8 in 50 overs (Mohammad Shahzad – 124, Mohammad Nabi – 64, Ravindra Jadeja – 3/46, Kuldeep Yadav – 2/38) tied with India – 252 all out in 49.5 overs (Lokesh Rahul – 60, Ambati Rayudu – 57, Mohammad Nabi – 2/40, Rashid Khan – 2/41)
