Asia Cup 2018, Super Four, Fourth Match, Afghanistan vs Bangladesh – Bangladesh won by 3 runs
Sunday, September 23, 2018, Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Twice in three days at the same venue, Afghanistan failed to get over the line! On Friday (Sep 21), they failed to defend 10 runs off the final over against Pakistan and they failed to score 8 runs off the final over in this match against Bangladesh. The match against Pakistan was completely different as the experienced Shoaib Malik was at the crease who scored two big shots to get those required 10 runs.
But in this match against Bangladesh, Afghanistan have only their batsmen to blame! Rashid Khan, Gulbadin Naib and Samiullah Shenwari all batted in the final over but they fell short by 3 runs in the end. Mustafizur Rahman bowled the final over of the match and conceded just 4 runs (which includes two leg-byes) to take his team to victory by a 3-run margin.
Imrul Kayes was making a comeback into the Bangladesh ODI side with this game and he utilised this rare opportunity effectively with an unbeaten score of 72* runs off 89 deliveries. His 128-run partnership with Mahmudullah for the sixth wicket helped Bangladesh get to a competitive total – 249 for 7 in 50 overs.
Afghanistan came so close while chasing but fell short in the end! Hashmatullah Shahidi has been in good nick with the bat and he registered yet another half century – 71 off 99 – in this Asia Cup season. Opener Mohammad Shahzad too contributed with a fine half century (53 off 81 balls). In the end, Afghanistan fell short of Bangladesh team total by a margin of 3 runs.
With a defeat in this match, Afghanistan are out of contention for the Asia Cup final while Bangladesh have to beat Pakistan in their next game to book a place in the final.
Bangladesh– 249/7 in 50 overs (Mahmudullah – 74, Imrul Kayes – 72*, Aftab Alam – 3/54, Mujeeb Ur Rahman – 1/35) beat Afghanistan – 246/7 in 50 overs (Hashmatullah Shahidi – 71, Mohammad Shahzad – 53, Mustafizur Rahman – 2/44, Mashrafe Mortaza – 2/62) by 3 runs
